QR Codes
QR Codes are 'quick response' barcodes. They are a square barcode that can be read by a scanner.
Why are they useful?
QR Codes can encode URLs, so you can direct people to:
- your facebook link, so they can 'like' you
- your newsletter, so they can sign up
- more information about an issue you mentioned in your print newsletter
Why not just put the URL on my print material?
If you have ever tried typing a long URL into a smartphone, you will know it is somewhat tedious. QR codes allow you to just scan the square, then the phone will browse automatically to the website.
So how do I create a QR code?
Just go to any of the free generators on the net, enter your URL, and the program will create the barcode image for you. You can then download this image and use it wherever you like.
One of the free barcode generators is www.qrstuff.com.
How do I scan a QR code with my phone?
Firstly you will need a smartphone (Apple or Android). Then just go to your app store and search for 'qr code reader'. Install the app, then use it to take a photo of the QR code using your phone's camera.
Some QR Reader apps for Android are:
- ZXing
- Kaywa
- Google Goggles
Where are QR codes currently being used?
I have seen QR codes recently on:
- Real estate windows
- Printed newsletters
- Print advertising
- Coffee cups
- T-shirts
